Behind the concept

Our collection of artworks focuses on the historical and current aspects of Carlisle that we find significant. We aimed to create pieces that draw inspiration from various locations and categories, with an emphasis on including hidden gems where possible.

We specifically chose the Penfold postbox and John Kent to include in one of our artworks due to them being lesser-known but significant parts of Carlisle's history.

The river Eden artworks were created with the intention of bringing attention to the area's rich wildlife habitat, highlighting its importance and promoting conservation efforts.

In our selection of LGBTQIA+ artworks, we aimed to address the underrepresentation of this demographic in Carlisle. We wanted to shine a light on talented artists who fall into this category, providing them with a platform to express themselves. This also felt important as many of our team fall into this demographic.

The replicas of Shaddon Mill and Dixon's chimney were created due to them both making records. Dixon's chimney, for being the 8th tallest in the world at the time of its creation, and the mills holding the record for being the largest cotton mills in England in 1836.

The Castle comics were inspired by the fact that Carlisle's castle served as a key point of defence on England's northwest border. It's fascinating to learn that Carlisle has been besieged more times than any other place in Britain, and we wanted to explore this aspect through this piece.

Lastly, the map is designed to tie all of the artworks together and incorporate geographical elements of Carlisle. During our research, we discovered that until very recently, The City of Carlisle was the largest city in England by area.

Overall, our goal with these artworks is to offer a diverse representation of Carlisle's history, culture, and natural beauty. We hope that they provide a unique and creative perspective.
